Halloween Fun Facts

  • Halloween can track its origins back to Celtic Ireland and the 5th Century BC. It was originally a celebration of the Celtic New Year. The tradition was brought over to the United States by Irish immigrants in the 1840’s who were fleeing the Potato Famine.
  • Trick or Treating began in the 9th Century in Europe as custom called souling. On November 2nd (All Souls Day) Christians would walk from house to house begging for “soul cakes” which were pieces of bread with currants. The beggars would exchange the bread for prayers for the donors’ dead relatives passage to heaven.
  • If we lined all of the Brach’s® Candy Corn / Mellowcremes we sell end-to-end it would circle the earth . . . 4 Times!
  • According to NCA (National Confectionery Association) Americans spent over $2.1 billion on candy during the 2005 Halloween season. This is the largest season for candy sales and a big portion of that total went to Brach's®, the nation's No. 1 candy-corn maker, and its top-selling products like Big Bag Candy Corn, "Autumn Mix", Indian Corn and "Assorted Mellowcreme" products.
  • Did you know it would take approximately 12,960,000 Milk Maid® Caramels to cover a regulation sized football field?
  • Americans consume an estimated 20 million pounds of candy corn each year – and Brach’s is the nation’s top seller.
  • One serving of Brach’s Candy Corn has only 140 calories. One kernel? About 5 calories, which according to nutritionists, supplies enough food energy for an average-sized adult to walk 150 feet – roughly the distance between the candy aisle and the express line in most grocery stores.
  • October 30 has been designated as National Candy Corn Day, and there’s no better way to celebrate than with a Big Bag of Brach’s Candy Corn.
  • Halloween is the sweetest holiday of the year, beating out Easter, Valentine's Day, and Christmas in sales of candy, including Brach’s Sweet Honey Candy Corn and Caramel Apple Candy Corn.
  • The biggest pumpkin in the world tipped the scales at a whopping 1,385 pounds. This gigantic gourd was weighed in October 2003 at a pumpkin festival in Canby, Oregon. Among the smallest? Brach’s “Mellowcreme” Pumpkins.
  • The very first jack o' lantern was made out of a turnip. The tastiest? Brach’s “Mellowcreme” Pumpkins.
  • Costumes are the second largest spending category behind candy.  Consumers will spend aproximately $1.15 billion on costumes.

How should candy canes be crushed?

Food processors can reduce canes to chunks or a fine powder. In order to achieve a texture and size variety, peppermints can be crushed using the "hammer" method:

  1. Enclose canes or peppermint candies in a re-sealable plastic bag.
  2. Place the bag on a firm or solid surface with a towel underneath the bag (to prevent scratching, marring or indenting the surface).
  3. Place another towel over the bag.
  4. “Hammer” the candy with a rolling pin, skillet, or – yes – a small hammer or rubber mallet until pieces reach the desired consistency.
